Bad breath is bad for business. Are your associates turning their heads away when you talk…read on, Perth dentist has a few useful tips

Smile and the world smiles back, but laugh out loud when you have bad breath and you may send people running

As a Perth Dentist, in Nedlands Western Australia with over 25 years experience, I can offer the following tips about halitosis, contributing factors and remedies.

In many cases “bad breath” is simply “morning breath” that lasts all day. When dreaming our bodies are designed to prevent drooling, and our saliva stops flowing. The dead cells, food and bacteria all start fermenting and upon awakening …Voila! morning breath! If you skip breakfast, and run off to work, you can be certain you will be unpopular. Breakfast is one of the best ways to clean all the smelly debris off your tongue. It is best if you choose something like a crunchy bread roll, or wholewheat toast instead of soft white bread. An apple instead of a banana, crispy cereal instead of soft porridge…You know what I mean. After breakfast make sure you perform perfect oral hygiene.(read some of the other posts on my “Perth Dentists” website for more information) If you didn’t floss or clean between your teeth before bed, don’t skip it now, as that is a sure way to get periodontal disease and bad breath. Lastly scrape your tongue, making sure to reach the posterior third, in the centre, where most of the odour causing germs hide. Be careful not to injure the row of very large mushroom-like taste-buds back there! Some people can brush their tongue but I find it gags me, and I can do a better job with a specially designed scraper. Chew a piece of sugar-free gum, preferably sweetened with Xylitol, on your way to work. This stimulates saliva flow and also has a pleasant masking effect. Anything that dries out your mouth like stress, air conditioning, not drinking enough water, medication, alcohol containing mouthwashes, smoking and mouth breathing when you have a cold combined with “post-nasal-drip” assists the smell generating germs on the back third of your tongue. Chewing gum (as above) several times a day can increase your saliva flow rate, but only if you drink enough water, and stop or reduce drying medication (consult your GP first) Using a mouthwash with Chlorhexidine, for 2 consecutive days a week, can be beneficial. You can’t use just any product as some will stain your teeth. Also you can’t use it right after brushing with normal toothpaste as it reduces the effect. Don’t use it all the time.

Home Remedies For Bad Breath – Do You Have Bad Breath Problems That Need Attention Now?

Bad breath problems are an embarrassing ailment and one that no one wishes to experience. However it is a common condition that thankfully can be treated effectively.

Some of the most commonly recommended home remedies for bad breath sufferers are not really that effective and do nothing to cure the underlying problem. These include things you may have already tried, such as:

Chewing gum.
Mints.
Peppermint mouthwash.

In fact the above remedies actually only mask the smell of your breath for a very short time. They certainly do not treat the cause and are not really a true remedy, only a way of masking the odors.

The main cause of bad breath problems are a build up of bacteria in your mouth. This can be on your tongue, teeth and your throat but the back of the tongue is the most likely place where bacteria will breed and cause the dreaded foul smell.

Chronic post nasal drip is another common cause of foul breath. This is when mucous falls from your nose down to the back of your throat.

One of the best home remedies for bad breath is to get rid of bacteria by using a tongue scraper. The tongue harbors a lot of bacteria, particularly right at the back. A quality stainless steel scraper will gently bring that debris forward, and it can then be washed off of the scraper. If you’ve never done this before, you will be surprised at how much bacteria comes off your tongue the first time. It is best to do this procedure first thing in the morning, before you’ve eaten or drank anything.

Avoiding particular foods can also help you to ward off halitosis. Foods like garlic and onion may cause a foul smell to occur. Some people have also had success with avoiding dairy products.

It goes without saying that brushing and flossing your teeth properly at least twice per day is a basic requirement for everyone, but especially for those that suffer from bad breath. If you can add tongue scraping into this routine then you will ensure that your mouth is truly clean.

There are also some medical conditions that are known to bring about bad breath problems. These can include acid reflux, sinus infections or liver problems.

Some people who suffer with chronic bad breath also have a condition known as tonsilloliths. These are commonly known as a tonsil stone and are smelly whitish/yellow lumps, which form within the tonsils. They are made up of mucous, sulfur-producing bacteria, post nasal drip, dead cells and food particles that collect in crypts within the tonsil region at the back of the throat. Eventually they dislodge and are either swallowed or coughed up into the mouth.

Now you may or may not suffer from tonsilloliths but a lot of people do and it is often linked with bad breath. A tonsil stone does give off an awful smell when squashed between the fingers and can be an unpleasant addition to bad breath problems.

If you are certain that your hygiene is excellent and you are in good health, but you are still noticing foul breath or tonsilloliths then there is an extremely effective product available that I personally use and highly recommend. It certainly made a difference to my life and was the only remedy that totally put a stop to my halitosis.

Question by niNJa: My Dog Has Really Bad Breath? >.<?
My dog has really bad breath…I could smell it when she was like 15 feet away from me. That bad. Her food is Pedigree Lamb & Rice. She eats her own poop, too. It’s absolutely disgusting. When she was a puppy we tried putting Tabasco sauce on it and on her hands so she wouldn’t chew on us, but she licked it off! My dog’s super weird! She likes Tabasco sauce!!! I haven’t known any dog that likes that stuff. How can I make her stop eating her own poop? And what can I do to freshen up her breath??

Thanks!
Edit:

Just so you know, the dog I use for my picture, is not my dog…
Dogs can’t eat chocolate…it could kill them.

How much do the doggy breath mints cost? Any price that you know of?

Edit:

OK, maybe not 15 feet away, maybe just five, but it stinks the entire room up!
@ melissa k

Well, I would scoop it right after, but I can’t during the day when I’m at school. She doesn’t eat it right away, though…so that gives me a little extra time…
My dog is healthy, I don’t think she has any health problems. She didn’t the last time she had a check-up. For her dog treats, we give her the Pup-peroni, could that also be causing her bad breath? Cuz, I think it says it’s beef flavor.
COULD YOU HELP ME WITH THIS ONE, TOO?!?!?!?!?!

@ alias boxer

Well, I’d tell my parents to switch, but I don’t want something too expensive. Plus, I don’t know if it would make her sick. That’s why we stick with this food.

Tips For An Effective Bad Breath Or Halitosis Cure

Bad breath, medically known as halitosis, touches numerous people around the world. It could be inconvenient to talk to anyone suffering from bad breath or halitosis. The word halitosis is derived from the Latin word “halitus” that means “breath”. Like we have discerned from school, when we don’t clean our teeth and if they start to rot, this could start halitosis.

A bad breath or halitosis cure may be difficult to acquire. Varied factors could appear to start bad breath or halitosis. Residual food crap in your mouth can make things bad yet this cannot be the exclusive reason for halitosis. The lung abscess while having bronchitis also causes halitosis. Some of the serious health problems emit distinctive types of odor. Conclusions have been drawn that halitosis is also because of poor digestion.

For maintaining the dental malodor, saliva shares a critical part in the process. On straining food leftovers and other rejected junk that composes halitosis, saliva moderates the malodor enabling it a good bad breath or halitosis cure. Morning breath can be casual being the salivary glands become inactive, but this may be managed through brushing. One of the apparent bad breath or halitosis cure could be having breakfast, therefore people who dismiss breakfast must be aware.

A number of foods might also start bad breath, including coffee, garlic and onions. Needless spice also spawns dental malodor. Many of these odors might even persist in your breath for seventy-two hours even after digestion. Consequently, reducing the consumption of these products may assist in keeping a good breath.

Some of the frequent and basic rules you could follow to secure oral health are:

* Everyday brushing

* If it helps, the use of dental floss and mouthwash

* Having a detailed dental diagnosis at least 2 times a year

* Cleaning the mouth after eating milk products

* Chewing sugar-free gums to dampen the mouth

* Intake of natural and fibrous vegetables could also help

* Intake of a lot of water or fluids (that excludes coffee, tea and other sugar added drinks)

* Avoiding from alcoholic drinks to prevent halitosis

Having a required oral regimen could be the best way to avoid dental odor, and it could be best bad breath or halitosis cure that can be practiced at home. Through thorough brushing and flossing, dental bacteria can be kept under control. Getting regular dental appointments can also be a good option in getting the bad breath or halitosis maintained and secure oral health.

Dental health influences the overall health. Don’t take your teeth and gum health carelessly, protect them from hazards through all natural oral products like OraDR. Get the necessary oral products that protects your teeth and gums and stops unnecessary side effects.

Question by 1Bex1: cause of bad breath…?
Ok I have bad breath and its so embarrassing. It started a few months ago when I found out I had really bad acid reflux. I then did some research and saw that it can cause bad breath. I brush my teeth all the time and it seems like minutes later you wouldn’t even be able to tell. I drink water all day long (I saw someone say that would help) I drink about 5 gallons of water every week. (I just really like water lol) I have horrible morning breath!! and i think that’s caused by my post nasal drip in the back of my throat…. anyway I just need some help figuring out how I can make this stop. I’m a very neat and clean person and you have no idea how much this p*$ $ es me off!! HELP!

Best answer:

Answer by Jay Pea
Try to open your mouth and see if you have white bumps and if you do try to get them out (those white bumps are Tonsillitis) Those can be quite smelly and can cause bad breath

Hope you will get better soon

Ok so my sister is always like “Your breath stinks.” That’s why I always chew gum/eat mints. If I don’t have something in my mouth, my breath stinks. I’ve been doing some research, and I found that it’s because of the bacteria on the far back of my mouth. That’s where the bad breath bacteria lives and that’s where the bad breath comes from. It is white back there, which is how it was described in my research. They say using a tooth brush to brush back there is effective, but every time I use it I can only get one swipe before I intensely gag. Therefore, I have never been able to completely brush back there to find out if that’s where the problem comes from. I know there are tongue scrapers out there, but I don’t want to buy it and waste my money if I will just gag. I do brush gently when I go back there, but it’s to no avail. How do I stop from gagging? It’s driving me nuts…

Answer by Brandy B
When you go to brush your tongue, close your throat up if you can. I always used to gag til I discovered this neat trick. Good Luck!!!

Question by FiShFrEnZy: Bad Breath?
I didn’t notice having bad breath until recently. I brush everyday and floss almost every day. My little sister tells me all the time my breath smells really bad (she’s blunt, but she wouldn’t lie). Even maybe 20 minutes after I brush my breath goes back to normal. I carry gum around most of the time but that only partially disguises it. I even brush my tongue most of the time, so I don’t think its coming from that. What is causing this and how can I stop it (if possible, for good)?
I have not changed my diet at all and really don’t have insurance that only covers the sole basics, so anything that wouldn’t require me to see a dentist would be much better.
Correction to the last added details:
I have insurance that only covers the sole basics (As opposed to not having insurance that covers the sole basics)

Answer by See-lee
sometimes it comes form what you eat or drink.,,,,or even upset stomach or acid indigestion. have you changed your diet recently? it could also come from bad teeth or gums.
you’ve mention doing several things but, try a mouth wash,,also the carry around type mouth refreshers.
hope it works.

Hey

So I’m just going to spill it…. I have bad breath.

I regularly brush and floss my teeth, and I have tried brushing my tongue (this usually almost leads to gagging). I am a gum addict, and I must have a piece of gum in my mouth at all times when I am in public. I try not to chew gum when I am at home. Maybe the addiction is because I am continuously thinking of what my breath is actually, but who knows….

I mentioned above that i don’t chew gum at home, that’s when I find out how bad my breath is. It’s SO embarassing. I am fed up with it, and I want it to stop.

I’ve researched a bit and I’ve noticed a lot of people suggest a tongue scraper, however I have gone to Wal-Mart (in Canada) and could not find any.

If you know of a cure that will help me, please share it with me..
I try to have a healthy diet.

My siblings have told me that I have bad breath

Answer by Megan
my question is do you eat well?? bcos sometimes ppl have bad breath due to not eating very well…
you should have a mouthwash like aquafresh every morning and b4 u go to bed bcos thats aimed at bad breath but i doubt it will work… maybe the fact that u chew gum 24/7 is why u have bad breath!!
or maybe this is all your imagination !!!
bcos unless a lot of ppl have actually told you that u got bad breath or have held their noses
then i dont think its a big problem!!
hope that helped
